Scars- An Anti-Vietnam War Poem + Reflection

Poem- My number came up before I turned 20And I said my goodbyesThinking back to the mud and bloodon the day they sent me to VietnamI arrived on a night surrounded by a lay virtually camp silent andstill,Then.. Crash! Crack! Boom!Mortars hitting with a sloshing clatter. Bodies falling for no real intellectualMy Sarge yellsLook for your targets! unless in the dark jungle it ain?t gentle!? back e really bush may be a target.. ? only when maybe non? That man in the field may be an impec atomic number 50t farmer.. ? thus far maybe notThe VC spend their gold on bullets not uniformsAnd we?re in their backyard uninvitedAnd unwel get on withWho were we fighting, why were we fightingWhat?s the case? There won?t be all winners in this warJust Infinite bloodshed and tears for allThe unlucky come foundation early to be laid to restUs lucky ones fade twain years later often with scars you cannot seeBy Jake RadowskiReflectionWhen I was precondition this task of writing a rime of relating to issues upraised in poetrys by Bruce daw/Oodgeroo Noonuccal I considered my context as a modern Australian and tried to figure out which issues relate closing-hauled to my heritage and background. I decided to write to the highest degree the Vietnam warfare which has been a topic in several of Bruce Daw?s verse forms. I ease up a couple of contends for this; beginning(a) is that my dad was close to being tippleed in the Vietnam struggle, but he was lucky as Gough Whitlam came into power and abolished conscription, in leadition he seems to know a dress circle well-nigh the Vietnam War for that very reason. Secondly and not so closely related but which I sight had some relevance was how my grandfather was in Poland during World War II and survived a concentration camp, his accounting has relevance as his country was invaded for no particular reason just as Vietnam was. My attitude to the Vietnam War has grown to be very impertinent to the war, and I am now communicate a lot of questions to knowledg! eable people about why the war purge started and if America?s reasons for focussing out in to the war were professedly or not. I settled that I am going to write a meter about the issues raised in the Vietnam War. Thee several issues that I thought were well-nigh important to raise are:The Australian conscription draft; The Soldiers never versed if who they were killing in the villages and jungles were VC or innocent Vietnamese as they did not just simply grind black and ovalbumin hats; The point of how some soldiers did not happen right about invading s country they knew nobody about and which had do nothing to them as well as the unknown puzzle they were fighting for.

In my poem I have been aiming for my ratifier to experience a sombre gradation and mood as close as I can to what a soldier may have been niping & experiencing. The difficulties that I experienced in my poem were aplenty; Firstly, trying to construct the poem in a way suitable for performance meter and choosing suitable words to add dramatic effect was hard. The reason I felt this was that my poem was at first too political and didn?t have much substance or story that was being told. In evaluating my poem I value I have through a reasonable channel of getting my point crossways to the reader and letting them feel in some esthesis of what it was like in Vietnam, and how fantastic and pointless the bloodshed was in this war. One improvement that I could have made was to be more successful in my language choices, as the poem seemed to lack in initial rhyme/assonance and similes. I think that my actual interest in the Vietnam War sui t itself has helped me to write this reasonably succe! ssful poem. In conclusion I think that I send an perceivable yet smasher message across to my readers about the ugly war that was Vietnam.
